About

SAIPAL — Safe & Aligned Intelligence PAL — is an independent research lab working on the safety and security of AI systems. We publish research, write essays, and build tools.

Mission

SAIPAL exists for a simple reason: we want humanity to prosper, and we want there to be less suffering in the world than there would otherwise be. AI will have a hand in both. Somebody should be looking at it carefully, in public, without a product to sell — that's the job this lab is built for.

Independence is the operating principle, not a slogan. SAIPAL is self-funded, which caps how fast it can grow but means problems get picked on their merits and findings get published as they are — including the negative ones. The lab is funded to be patient.

Our founding domain is cybersecurity, and the work leans that way. The first project is HighGround, a public king-of-the-hill cybersecurity competition: competitors attack, defend, and hold — and an open leaderboard keeps score of how current AI models actually perform on offensive and defensive security tasks. Safety and security are two ends of the same problem — a system that does what its operator intends, run by operators the rest of us don't have to fight.

The name has two meanings. Saipal is a Himalayan peak in the far west of Nepal — a quiet anchor for a lab that aims for hard things from outside the usual centres. It’s also an acronym: Safe & Aligned Intelligence Pal — AI as a partner, not an adversary.

Principles

  • Be specific.

Vague claims don’t move the field. We try to write the most specific true thing we can defend.

  • Show your work.

Code, data, and reasoning are part of the paper. If we can’t share an artifact, we explain why.

  • Take ideas seriously, including the ones that turn out wrong.

A negative result is still a result. We publish what we learn even when the answer is “no.”

  • Stay independent.

We work outside any single institution so we can pick problems on their merits and disagree publicly when it matters.
